Cysts Q & A

What is a cyst?

A cyst is an abnormal, closed sac-like structure that can develop in various parts of the body, including the skin and internal organs. These sacs can contain fluid, air, tissue, or other substances. While many cysts resolve on their own, persistent cysts can cause discomfort, be cosmetically unappealing, or even pose potential health risks. Surgical removal is often the most effective treatment option for persistent or problematic cysts.

What are the symptoms of cysts?

Skin cysts often go unnoticed as they may not cause any symptoms. However, common signs of epidermoid cysts include:

  • The presence of a small bump on the face, neck, or trunk of the body.
  • Redness or swelling around the bump.
  • Tenderness when touched.
  • The presence of a small black dot (blackhead) in the center of the bump.

Infected cysts can become filled with pus, which may ooze from the cyst and have an unpleasant odor. Treating the infection promptly is crucial to prevent cyst rupture and the spread of infection.

What causes cysts?

Skin cysts can arise from various factors, including:

  • Trauma: Injury to the skin can sometimes trigger cyst formation.
  • Genetics: A predisposition to cyst formation can be inherited.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can contribute to the development of certain types of cysts.

In the case of epidermoid cysts, the underlying cause often involves the entrapment of epidermal cells (skin cells) within the deeper layers of the skin. These trapped cells continue to grow and produce keratin (a protein), leading to the formation of a fluid- or semi-solid-filled sac within the skin.

Are there other conditions that look like cysts?

Several conditions can present with similar appearances to cysts, including:

  • Lipomas: These are noncancerous fatty tumors that typically develop between the skin and muscle. While generally harmless, lipomas can cause discomfort or be cosmetically unappealing. In rare cases, they may undergo malignant transformation.
  • Skin Cancer: Skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, can sometimes appear as nodules or bumps that resemble cysts. Early detection is crucial for successful treatment.
  • Moles: Moles are pigmented skin growths that can vary in color, including brown, black, tan, or even match your skin tone. If a mole exhibits characteristics similar to a cyst, a thorough skin cancer screening is essential to rule out malignancy.
